The world needs more trees and hedgerows. There are massive government commitments (UK and many others) to increase planting rates and numerous farm grants for hedgerow planting and woodland creation. RJ Trees and Hedging Ltd is one of a very few specialised wholesale British nurseries growing millions of young sapling trees and hedging plants from seed and hardwood cuttings to help meet this demand.
RJ Trees and Hedging Ltd is named after Ray Jenkins who has over 3 decades' experience in field growing bare root wholesale hedging plants and tree saplings. Ray has represented the field growing sector of the UK horticultural market on several committees (he's currently vice chair of the HTA Tree and Hedging Group) and run numerous trials. With is own his name on everything we do, and the benefit of all of Ray's years of experience and skill, we are all very proud of our contribution to the effort to grow more trees and hedging plants in Britain.
RJ Trees and Hedging grows bare root tree saplings and hedging plants from seed in irrigated fields in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Herefordshire countryside and is a wholesale nursery supplying trade customers (see Our Customers). The farm had been a dairy farm for decades until our arrival so the soil is nutrient-rich. It is light and sandy soil – absolutely ideal for rapid development of the roots to ensure that plants can be lifted without root damage (maintaining a good root to shoot ratio) for better plant survival when replanted into their permanent positions. Because we grow in fields, we use no peat, and have no greenhouses or polytunnels which require heating, so this is the most natural and eco-friendly way of growing plants with the bonus that the lack of inputs also makes field growing the lowest cost method of growing plants. The farm has a large reservoir filled during the winter from an underground spring (which helps prevent flooding further down the Wye Valley) so we can water throughout the summer.
Our customers are other wholesale nurseries, farmers, foresters and forestry consultants, landowners and land agents, local authorities, builders and developers, online retailers, specifiers, landscape architects, landscapers, charities, schools, sports clubs and the like. We have a minimum order value of £1000 + VAT. Trade terms are available for those spending £5,000 + VAT or more per year.

Plants can be reserved from summer onwards and you should reserve early if at all possible because there are enormous shortages across the whole UK market for bare root plants. Plants are despatched when dormant between November and early April and we can accommodate specific delivery dates providing these are booked sufficiently early. You can pre-order by phone or by processing an order on the website and we will contact you nearer the start of the despatch season to schedule a delivery date with you.
We are members of the Horticultural Trades Association, the Confederation of Forest Industries and are a registered supplier of Forestry Reproductive Materials. Our plant passport number is GB141433. We are also one of the very limited number of members of the Confor Nursery Producers@ Group which is a special interest group of progressive, commercial UK forest nurseries.
Ray is a steering group member and vice chair of the Horticultural Trades Association Tree and Hedging Group.
We are an approved Plant Healthy nursery (number 0027) having passed the rigorous biosecurity audit, and we also have the UKISG (UK and Ireland Sown and Grown) accreditation which is a Woodland Trust led initiative.
