Bare root tree saplings and hedging plants grown from seed in Herefordshire

We don't just sell hedging plants and tree saplings - we grow them ourselves. Industry veteran, Ray Jenkins set up RJ Trees and Hedging to grow British bare root hedging plants and trees for woodland creation and forestry, farm hedgerows and urban landscaping projects.

We grow millions of bare root plants (in fields like an arable crop) in all the main hedging, broadleaf and conifer species, many from seed over one and two years (also called whips or seedlings) and some are grown from seedlings into transplants over a further growing season or more.  We also grow some species from hardwood cuttings. Ray Jenkins has over 35 years' experience of field growing bare root plants and our quality is second to none.

We have a wide range of species.  In hedging, we have hawthorn, blackthorn and all the species you might expect to find in a mixed native hedge (such as field maple, hazel, dog rose, crab apple, spindle, guelder rose and many more) as well the classic beech and hornbeam hedging plants, and a lot of less common species.  We also have some evergreen hedging plants (yew, box, privet and cherry laurel).  In broadleaf trees, we have the usual birch (silver birch and downy birch), oak (english oak and sessile oak), several alder and poplar varieties as well as many other species.

The season for bare root plants is November until early April, sometimes a bit earlier and sometimes a bit later, weather and stock levels dependent.  If you require delivery in November you need to pre order, to get into the queue for a prompt delivery.

British-grown tree saplings and hedging plants are in huge demand to minimise the biosecurity risk of importing plant material whilst meeting Government objectives to dramatically increase tree planting in order to help achieve the UK net zero goals via woodland creation and hedgerow planting and now grant aided for farmers via the Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS).  R J Trees and Hedging is proud to contribute to this important objective and we have considerable experience of the Countryside Stewardshire Scheme.  We are a Plant Healthy nursery and adhere to the highest possible standards of plant bio-security. We are also accredited by UKISG which is the Woodland Trust-led biosecurity initiative.
